Status and Occurrence This subspecies of Savannah Sparrow (P.s. nevadensis) is the commonest and most widespread form found over much of California in winter.  It is a common summer resident in the northeastern portion of its range.  Inhabits grasslands, wet meadows, salt marshes and vegetation along beaches and breakwaters.
